type='text'>Courtney Hansen Overhaulin

Does your gorgeous stately manner in the Hamptons have a room that’s in need of a little help? Sure it does, so why not call in TLC’s Trading Spaces, and get your best friends over to glue some wrapping paper on the walls, ceiling and your grandmother’s antique hutch? While they’re at it, they can build some chintzy looking furniture out of two by fours, and paint the whole thing black. It’s crazy, but it works. Wanna watch a motorcycle being built from scratch, and while you’re at it see the mechanics and stars of Discovery Channel’s American Chopper bicker and fight over every little move? If you’re like me, you look forward to it every Monday.Would you like to see a pack-rat family get a little help from some people that don’t mind saying, “Hey, maybe you don’t need to keep that rickety old card table that’s missing a leg and maybe, just maybe you shouldn’t keep every TV guide you’ve gotten since 1963.” Yes! How could you not? TLC has the answer with its program Clean Sweep.The Make-Something-Out-of-Nothing genre of reality show has really taken off. Flipping down the dial on any given weeknight will result in any number of shows along the same lines, most of them appealing to a broad range of people. It seemed as though the formula could be endlessly bastardized, creating show after show based on the same theme, making something out of nothing, and that theme could do no wrong. That is, until the TLC series Overhaulin’ came along and proved that, yes, everything has a limit.On the surface, the concept of the show actually seems rather nice. Based on the recommendation of a friend or family member, they take some deserving person’s car and allow a very talented group of designers and mechanics, led by the legendary Chip Foose, to rebuild, restore, and without fail, totally revitalize the vehicle in only seven days. Every car showcased so far, from a 1950 Ford Coupe, to a late 70s El Camino, to a 1991 Ford Explorer, has been transformed from an aging, dilapidated hulk into something that is just short of a work of art. In that lies the part of the show that is worth seeing. It’s what drags the show out of what could be a fiery stint in television hell, but it falls short of saving it from the portion they call “messing with the mark”.Every episode of Overhaulin’ spends a considerable amount of time putting the unknowing owner of the vehicle through a hellish ordeal. The show’s hosts and production staff make prank calls, pose as police officers, lawyers, and insurance agents, while various insiders, friends and family in on the joke set out to make the ‘mark’ believe that they may never get their car back, and in many cases that they are actually suspected of orchestrating the car’s disappearance in an attempt at insurance fraud. While this seems like a funny concept, it’s really rather uncomfortable to watch. After all, messing with someone’s car is often considered the highest form of insult. Maybe if it were done well, and not so emphatically tortuous, it would be better, but Courtney Hansen and Chris Jacobs, the show’s hosts, make sure to make the whole thing as tasteless as possible. They seem to take delight in every step of messing with the mark, from the cheesy acting, to the over the top prank calls, even in reducing some poor guy to tears. The time spent messing with the mark is hands down the worst part of the show and unfortunately this process gets the largest portion of airtime.On the whole, Chris and Courtney are completely expendable. They add absolutely nothing to the design and build of the car. Not only that, but they are so completely obnoxious that one would almost rather have a lengthy conversation with someone that has a booger hanging out of their nose than have to listen to their banal chatter. All the while they lend a hand much in the Bob Vila tradition in which they actually do very little, then turn to the camera and act as though they’ve single-handedly stopped world hunger. They prattle on about the specifics of the build, which would be much more believable and appropriately presented by an actual member of the build team, while actually not being very specific at all. In fact, if as much time was spent on the actual building of the car as is these two smarmy bits of eye candy rehashing the entire show, giving sugary sweet commentary, and playing mind games with the poor owners, this show might actually be a salvageable concept. Unfortunately, the producers don’t share my vision.Overhaulin’s saving grace, even more so than the fabulous creations that result, is known on the show as ‘the A team’, led by Chip Foose, who is known throughout the country as one of the premiere names in the hot rod world. His cars win awards, are highly sought after, and are quite simply amazing. Under Chip’s energetic, and unflappably artistic guidance is a team of folks from all walks of the automotive industry. The country’s top auto parts makers, body shops, engine builders, and paint works are all represented and they spend every second of the those seven days making sure that the mark’s week in hell is worth it.In the end, an unmatched artistic feat is unveiled and everyone goes home happy. Chris and Courtney get to lead the mark to their now bright and shiny new gem. The owner gets to drive away in what would doubtlessly have cost them tens of thousands of dollars to have done. The viewer walks away from the show the loser. They didn’t really get to see much of the design/build if that’s what they wanted to see, and if they were in for a morbid prank being played on some unsuspecting citizen, well, they got hosed there too. These pranks are just aren’t up to snuff. At the end of each show, the mark is asked to say, “Hi, my name is such-and-such and I’ve been overhauled.” I can only hope to tune in next season to the sound of Chris and Courtney uttering that phrase while standing in line for their government cheese.

Courtney Hansen Overhaulin

Courtney Hansen grew up in Orono, Minn., where she modeled as a child and developed a passion for writing and entertaining early on.
